Salar de Uyuni in southwest Bolivia is the world's largest salt flat. This surreal landscape was formed from a prehistoric lake and covers an area of 10,500 square kilometers (4,100 square miles). The blindingly white expanse of salt crust is dotted with unusual rock formations and cacti-covered islands. During the rainy season, a thin layer of water transforms the salt flat into a giant mirror, reflecting the sky and creating a mesmerizing illusion.
